Chippenham Town Win the Southern League in 2017

2017

Chippenham Town secured the 2016–17 Southern League Premier Division title without playing on the decisive day.

There are many ways to win a league championship, but Chippenham Town's decisive moment in 2017 was unusually quiet. After a superb unbeaten sequence stretching from November towards Easter, the Bluebirds were close to the Southern League Premier Division title. On Good Friday, their rivals Leamington failed to win at Biggleswade, mathematically confirming Chippenham as champions without the Wiltshire side kicking a ball that day. The celebrations could wait until Easter Saturday, when a large crowd gathered at Hardenhuish Park to salute the achievement. Promotion carried Chippenham into National League South after sixteen seasons in the Southern League. It was a reward for months of consistent performances rather than a single dramatic goal, and a reminder that results elsewhere can sometimes deliver football's happiest news.
