Hereford United Shock Newcastle in the FA Cup
1972
📅 05/02/1972
Ronnie Radford helped non-league Hereford United beat Newcastle United in 1972.
One of the FA Cup's most enduring images belongs to a non-league player on a muddy pitch. In February 1972, Hereford United faced First Division Newcastle United in a third-round replay at Edgar Street. With Newcastle leading, Ronnie Radford unleashed a spectacular long-range equaliser that sent the crowd surging in celebration. Ricky George then scored the winner in extra time, completing a 2–1 victory for the Southern League club. The match became a symbol of what makes the FA Cup special: reputation and league position could not guarantee anything once the whistle blew. Radford's goal has been replayed for generations, but the result was a collective triumph for a club, its supporters and the wider non-league game.
