The White Horse Final of 1923
1923
📅 28/04/1923
The 1923 FA Cup final became famous for the mounted policeman and white horse helping clear the pitch.
The first FA Cup final at the original Wembley Stadium was staged on 28 April 1923, with Bolton Wanderers facing West Ham United. The event attracted a vast crowd, and spectators spilled onto the playing area before kick-off. Mounted police helped move people back, with one white horse becoming the enduring image of the day. Although other horses and officers were involved, the occasion became known as the White Horse Final. Bolton eventually won 2–0, but the extraordinary scenes before the match overshadowed the scoreline in popular memory. The final illustrated both football's enormous public appeal and the difficulties of managing huge crowds in an era before modern stadium arrangements. It remains one of Wembley's defining early stories.
