The FA Cup Introduces the Third-Round Tradition
The FA Cup third round became a familiar meeting point for top-flight and lower-league clubs.
For generations of English football supporters, the FA Cup third round has signalled a special moment in the calendar. Clubs from the highest divisions enter the competition and can be drawn against opponents from much further down the football pyramid. For smaller clubs, the draw can bring a famous name, a welcome financial boost and an opportunity to test themselves on a national stage. The fixture may be played at a compact ground with terraces close to the pitch or at a vast stadium rarely visited by the underdogs. Either way, league position offers no guarantee over ninety minutes. The third round has become shorthand for the competition's democratic appeal: an ordinary club can enjoy an extraordinary afternoon.
