Brian Clough: A Manager Who Refused to Be Ordinary
1979
Brian Clough combined outspoken confidence with extraordinary managerial success.
Brian Clough was one of English football's most distinctive personalities. As a striker he scored goals at a remarkable rate, but injury curtailed his playing career and management became his stage. With Peter Taylor, he transformed Derby County into league champions and later led Nottingham Forest to astonishing success, including two European Cups. Clough's interviews were often as memorable as his teams' performances: confident, sharp and rarely predictable. Yet beneath the famous remarks was a manager who demanded teamwork, discipline and the courage to play football properly. His story is especially striking because Forest's greatest triumphs came soon after promotion to the top division. Few managers have combined such dramatic results with such a recognisable public character.
