The Original Wembley Opens for the FA Cup
1923
📅 28/04/1923
The original Wembley Stadium staged its first FA Cup final in 1923.
Wembley became a symbol of English football almost as soon as its famous twin towers appeared on the skyline. Built for the British Empire Exhibition, the original stadium opened in 1923 and hosted the FA Cup final between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United. That inaugural match became the White Horse Final because of the enormous crowd and efforts to clear spectators from the pitch. In the decades that followed, Wembley hosted internationals, cup finals and the 1966 World Cup final. For countless supporters, a trip there represented the pinnacle of a club season. The original building eventually closed and was replaced, but its name and associations endured. Wembley was never merely a venue: it became part of football's shared imagination.
