Goodison Park: One of Football’s Great Old Homes
1892
Everton moved into Goodison Park in 1892, creating one of England’s most historic grounds.
Goodison Park opened in 1892 after Everton left Anfield, and it became one of the most recognisable homes in English football. Generations of supporters approached the ground through ordinary Liverpool streets before emerging into a stadium full of noise and history. Goodison hosted major domestic matches and games during the 1966 World Cup, giving it an international place in football memory. Its traditional stands and close relationship with the surrounding neighbourhood helped create an atmosphere that modern stadium design can struggle to reproduce. For many fans, the ground represented more than a collection of seats and turnstiles: it was where family traditions were passed down and familiar Saturday rituals repeated. The story of Goodison is also the story of football's bond with its communities.
