The First International Football Match
1872
📅 30/11/1872
Scotland and England played the first officially recognised international in 1872.
On 30 November 1872, Scotland and England met at Hamilton Crescent in Partick, Glasgow, for a match that would become a landmark in sporting history. The encounter is generally recognised as the first official international association football match. It ended 0–0, a scoreline that hardly suggests the importance of the occasion. The players wore clothing very different from modern kits, and tactics were still evolving as teams experimented with passing and dribbling. Yet the essential idea was already powerful: representative teams from two nations meeting under agreed rules. From this modest beginning grew the international calendar, continental championships and World Cups familiar today. Sometimes football history begins not with a spectacular goal but with a goalless draw.
