From Heavy Cotton to Modern Football Kits
Football shirts evolved from heavy everyday fabrics into lightweight technical sportswear.
A football shirt from the early years of organised competition could be a very different garment from the one worn by a modern professional. Early kits commonly used sturdy fabrics, and wet conditions could make clothing heavy and uncomfortable. Clubs gradually developed recognisable colours and patterns so that teams could be distinguished on the field. As manufacturing changed, shirts became lighter, more flexible and better suited to movement. Commercial sponsorship, replica sales and increasingly elaborate designs later turned football kits into a major part of the sport's culture. Yet supporters still cherish the simplest stripes, hoops and plain colours, because a shirt is more than sportswear. It carries memories of players, promotions, disappointments and the seasons that made a club feel like home.
