1973
📅 05/05/1973
Second Division Sunderland beat Leeds United 1–0 in the 1973 FA Cup final.
On 5 May 1973, Second Division Sunderland faced mighty Leeds United in the FA Cup final at Wembley. Leeds were regarded as overwhelming favourites, with a team full of established international players. Sunderland, managed by Bob Stokoe, had other ideas. Ian Porterfield scored in the first half, and goalkeeper Jim Montgomery produced a remarkable double save to preserve the lead. The final whistle confirmed a 1–0 victory and one of the competition's great surprises. Images of Stokoe running across the Wembley pitch to celebrate with Montgomery became part of football folklore. Sunderland's achievement showed that the FA Cup could still reward determination and belief over reputation. For supporters on Wearside, the fifth of May became a date worth remembering.
